The Humble Router: Your Internet’s Air Traffic Controller

Imagine your surprise if you opened Google to search for the best Gemini prompts or to plan a trip, but in return, the information you receive is your neighbor’s Reddit thread discussing “is a hot dog a sandwich?”

You probably don’t have a story like this because your router is doing its job, ensuring that your search results are yours, not your neighbor’s. Think of your router as your personal air traffic controller, skilled at routing “flights,” or in this case, internet traffic from your modem to your devices (phones, laptops, TVs) because it knows the flight plan.

Router failures, on the other hand, can lead to financial loss, workflow disruption and damaged customer trust. OIT's Network Optimization team recently completed a multi-year, statewide router refresh project that:

  • Replaced approximately 8,200 outdated routers
  • Updated equipment at 17 agencies and
  • Included 343 locations in multiple counties

Projects like these strengthen security and make it easier for networks to join modern cloud services. This focus ensures our own flight plan continually improves customer experience and builds reliable systems that Coloradans can depend on.
